Have a .p7m file on your PC?
You can open P7M files online in an up-to-date browser such as Edge or Chrome. Your document is processed on your device. Opening files, signature checks and the first PDF page are free; downloads, printing and full previews require a paid plan.
Open a P7M file on Windows in four steps
Start with the online P7M viewer on the homepage. The workflow is the same on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Save the attachment to your PC.
In Outlook, webmail or Italian certified email (PEC), save the individual .p7m attachment to a folder you can find, such as Downloads. Wait for it to finish and keep its full name, such as contract.pdf.p7m. If the email contains an attached message, find the signed document inside that message first.
Choose the file on the homepage.
Click “Choose a file” and select the P7M in the file picker, or drag it from File Explorer into the file area. You do not need to double-click it first. The contents are read in browser memory without uploading the document to a server.
Read the contents and the results.
For a PDF, the first page is free to preview. A supported FatturaPA XML invoice is displayed in a readable layout. Check integrity, certificate dates, trust and revocation separately; seeing the document does not mean that every check has passed.
Export a copy and keep the original.
With a paid plan you can download, print, view all PDF pages or export a ZIP. Find the file in your browser’s Downloads panel or the folder you chose when saving. Keep the P7M you received too: the extracted document does not replace the signed envelope.
Windows asks which app should open the P7M?
A .pdf.p7m file contains a document inside a CAdES signature envelope based on CMS/PKCS#7. If double-clicking brings up an app chooser, select the file in the homepage viewer or a dedicated app. A PDF reader is useful after extraction: changing .p7m to .pdf does not convert the file.
To see the full filename, press Windows + E and show file extensions in File Explorer:
- Windows 11
- Choose View → Show → File name extensions. Check whether the name ends in .pdf.p7m, .xml.p7m or just .p7m.
- Windows 10
- On the View tab, in Show/hide, select File name extensions. Do not remove the extension to force the file to open.
Standard Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025. For this workflow, use a browser that still receives updates and a device covered by applicable security updates.
P7M to PDF on Windows: extraction or conversion?
When you want to convert P7M to PDF, check the format inside the envelope first. The P7M extension alone does not identify a PDF.
- PDF.P7M
- Download the original PDF extracted without changing its bytes. You can then open it in Edge or your PDF reader. The CAdES signature remains in the P7M envelope and need not appear as a visible signature on the PDF.
- XML.P7M · FatturaPA
- For a supported invoice, read the data, extract the original XML or generate a readable PDF of its main fields. This PDF is a reading copy, not the signed XML invoice.
- Other documents
- Generic XML, a Word document or other contents do not automatically become a PDF. After extraction, use an app that supports the original format.
Windows software for opening and verifying P7M files
If you prefer an installed program, the tools below can open the signed envelope, check signatures and extract its contents. These steps follow the official guides and retain the Italian button labels so you can find them in the app.
For a public-agency reference, consult the AgID directory of signature-verification software and check current requirements on the provider’s website. A listing does not mean that the government developed the program. Within the Italian Chambers of Commerce system, InfoCamere offers its own desktop software.
InfoCamere Sign Desktop: the Chambers of Commerce option
The Chambers of Commerce portal distributes InfoCamere Sign Desktop for 64-bit Windows 10 and 11. Its download page labels Firma4NG as legacy software; start with the current version for a new installation.
- Download InfoCamere Sign Desktop for Windows from the official portal, run the installer and open the program.
- Choose “Verifica” (Verify) in the left menu. Click “seleziona” (select) to choose the P7M, or drag it into the file area.
- Wait for the result and inspect the signature and certificate details in the report.
- In the report’s actions, choose “Salva il file sorgente” (Save source file) to extract the document. Open the saved file with a program that supports its format.
“Salva report PDF” saves the verification report, not the document inside the P7M. To recover the original PDF or XML, use “Salva il file sorgente”.
Aruba Sign: open and extract the document
Aruba Sign is a signing and verification program from a private provider. Its official compatibility list includes Windows 10 and later.
- Download the Windows version of Aruba Sign from Aruba’s official page, complete the installation and launch the program.
- Open “Verifica” (Verify) and drag in the P7M, or select it from your PC.
- Select the document in the list and choose “Apri documento” (Open document) to read its contents.
- Choose “Estrai documento” (Extract document) and select a folder for the original file.
Extraction preserves the content format: a PDF stays a PDF and XML stays XML. Keep the P7M envelope you received as well.
InfoCert Sign Desktop: verification and extraction
InfoCert’s desktop software requires at least 64-bit Windows 10, update 1809; the provider recommends Windows 11 23H2 or later.
- Install the desktop version from InfoCert’s official website and open the program.
- On the home screen, choose “Verifica” (Verify) and select the P7M saved on your PC.
- Open “Dettagli” (Details) to inspect the signatures; the eye icon in the details shows the signer and certificate.
- Use “Estrai” (Extract) in the verification panel to recover the original content, then open it with an app that supports its format.
The current manual allows up to 5 document verifications per month without signing in. Check the current terms for your profile; do not assume every feature is free or unlimited.
Desktop programs may use a connection to update certificates and revocation information. Review their web features and terms separately. On p7m online, the document stays in your browser and there are no online OCSP or CRL requests: an unavailable check remains not verified.
Open P7M without installing software on a work PC
The browser viewer needs no P7M installer or administrator permission to install it. Your organisation’s rules still apply: website access, JavaScript or file selection may be restricted. If the browser is blocked, ask IT which approved tool to use. Do not disable security controls to open an attachment.
A readable document is not a complete signature check
p7m online separates cryptographic integrity, certificate dates, chain trust and revocation. Checks run locally, without online OCSP or CRL requests. Without revocation evidence, the result remains not verified. An expired certificate and altered content are different findings; do not reduce them to one “valid” status. These checks are not qualified legal validation.
P7M file won’t open on Windows?
- Incomplete download or wrong attachment
- Download the file again from its source. A login page saved as .p7m, a PEC receipt or the whole email message is not the signed document you want to open.
- The file opens, but it is not a PDF
- Check the content type. An XML invoice needs a suitable view; generic XML or another document may only be extracted. Renaming the file does not change its format.
- Encrypted file or detached signature
- The site opens CMS SignedData envelopes; it does not decrypt S/MIME email or EnvelopedData. Encrypted content requires the recipient’s private key and a compatible client. A detached signature also needs the original document.
- The browser cannot finish processing
- Use an up-to-date browser with JavaScript enabled and try one document at a time. You can select up to 50 files per session; the tool imposes no file size limits, but browser memory can run out. Check for unsupported format or algorithm errors.
Questions about P7M files on Windows
Can I open P7M files on Windows 11 without installing software?
Yes. For supported documents, use the homepage viewer in an up-to-date browser. You do not need to install a signing app. Creating new digital signatures requires a dedicated tool.
Is opening P7M on Windows 10 free?
On p7m online, opening files, signature checks and the first PDF page are free, with no registration. Downloads, printing, all pages and ZIP exports require a paid plan. Use an up-to-date browser compatible with your system.
Can a regular PDF reader open a PDF.P7M file?
To read its contents with a normal PDF reader, first extract the PDF from the P7M envelope. The site’s viewer handles that step in your browser. Removing .p7m from the name is not enough, and the contents may be XML rather than PDF.
Do I need to set a default app for P7M files?
No. For the browser method, choose the document on the homepage or drag it into the file area. A default file association is only needed if you want double-clicking to open P7M files in a desktop app.
Is there a Chambers of Commerce program for opening P7M?
Yes. InfoCamere Sign Desktop is available from the official digital identity portal of the Italian Chambers of Commerce. For other options, consult AgID’s directory and the providers’ websites. Software listed by AgID is not necessarily a government product.
