Already have the file on your Mac?
You can open P7M files online and read the contents on your device. Opening files and viewing the first PDF page are free; exports and full previews require a paid plan.
Open a P7M file on Mac, step by step
Start with the file you received by email, Italian certified email (PEC) or download. Open the P7M viewer for Mac in an up-to-date browser, then follow these steps.
Save the attachment to your Mac.
In Mail, use the attachment menu to save it, or drag it to Finder. If you use PEC webmail, download the signed attachment from the message. Keep the full name, such as contract.pdf.p7m, and wait for the download to finish.
Choose the P7M in your browser.
On the homepage, click “Choose a file” and select the document in Finder, or drag it into the file area. The file is processed in browser memory on your Mac, without sending the document to a server.
Read the document and the results.
If the envelope contains a PDF, you can view the first page for free. A supported FatturaPA XML invoice opens in a readable layout. Review integrity, certificate dates, trust and revocation as separate results.
Download a copy and keep the P7M.
Downloads, printing, full PDF previews and ZIP exports require a paid plan. When exporting, save the extracted document to your chosen folder. Keep the P7M you received as well: the readable copy does not replace the original signed envelope.
Why won’t Preview open a .p7m file?
A .pdf.p7m file is not an ordinary PDF: the document is inside a CAdES signature envelope based on CMS/PKCS#7. A P7M reader must extract the contents first. Use Preview to read the extracted PDF rather than opening the signed envelope.
Renaming contract.pdf.p7m to contract.pdf only changes its name. It does not extract the document or convert its format. Keep the original and open it with a tool that understands the P7M envelope.
P7M to PDF on Mac: what you get
Before you convert P7M to PDF on Mac, check what is inside the envelope. A P7M does not always contain a PDF.
- PDF.P7M
- Extract the original PDF without changing its bytes. After downloading it, you can open it in Preview on your Mac.
- XML.P7M · FatturaPA
- Read the invoice and generate a readable PDF of its main fields. You can also download the original XML. The generated PDF is a reading copy, not the signed invoice.
- Other contents
- Extraction does not automatically turn every document into a PDF. Generic XML or another format may need a suitable app to read it after downloading.
A paid plan is required to download, print or view every PDF page. Compare free features and paid plans.
XML.P7M invoices and PEC attachments on Mac
If you received a signed Italian electronic invoice, you can read an XML.P7M invoice in the site’s FatturaPA view. The document is still XML: a readable PDF lets you consult or print it and does not replace the original.
Save the individual .p7m attachment from your PEC message, then select it in Finder. The PEC message, delivery receipts and attachment are different items. If you need them for records or evidence, retain the original message and receipts too. Select the document rather than the whole email.
Reading the document and checking the signature
Seeing a PDF does not prove that every signature check has passed. p7m online displays independent results:
- Integrity
- Does the content match the digest and cryptographic signature?
- Certificate dates
- Is the certificate within the validity period being checked?
- Trust
- Does the chain reach an authority in the local copy of trusted authorities?
- Revocation
- Is verifiable revocation evidence present in the envelope? Without it, the result remains not verified.
Checks run locally, without online OCSP or CRL requests. Unknown or unverified results remain so. These checks are not qualified legal validation. Keep the P7M and use an appropriate service if your procedure requires formal validation.
P7M file won’t open on your Mac?
- Check the download: an incomplete attachment or a web page saved with a .p7m extension is not a valid envelope. Download the document again from its source if needed.
- Select up to 50 files per session, with no file size limits imposed by the tool. Processing capacity depends on your browser and available memory.
- Use an up-to-date browser with JavaScript enabled. If Mail cannot preview the attachment, save it first and select it on the homepage.
- Read the error: an encrypted envelope, detached signature or unsupported internal format needs different steps. A detached signature also requires the original document. Renaming the file will not fix the issue.
When to use InfoCert Sign or Aruba Sign on macOS
You can read supported files in the browser. If you need to create a digital signature, use signing hardware or follow a company procedure, choose a dedicated application and check the provider’s current requirements.
Mac options include InfoCert Sign Desktop from InfoCert and Aruba Sign. Check supported macOS versions in the official documentation. p7m online opens documents that are already signed; it does not create new signatures.
Questions about P7M files on Mac
Can I open a P7M file on Mac without installing software?
Yes. Use the viewer on the homepage with an up-to-date browser and JavaScript enabled. You do not need to install a digital signing app to read supported documents.
Is opening P7M files on Mac free?
On p7m online, opening files, checking signatures and viewing the first PDF page are free, with no registration. Downloads, printing, every PDF page and ZIP exports require a paid plan.
Do Apple Silicon and Intel Macs need different versions?
The reader runs in your browser, so there is no P7M installer to choose for Apple Silicon or Intel. Use an up-to-date browser compatible with your macOS version. Opening a file also depends on its format and the document limits.
Can I open smime.p7m or an encrypted file?
The site opens CMS SignedData envelopes. It does not decrypt S/MIME emails or EnvelopedData envelopes. Encrypted content requires the recipient’s private key and a compatible client. The P7M extension alone does not distinguish these cases.
