The PDF may already be inside your P7M file.
If the envelope contains a PDF, you can retrieve the original document simply by extracting it—no conversion or page re-creation required. If it contains an XML invoice or another format, extraction keeps that original format. A .p7m extension alone doesn’t guarantee the file is a PDF.
Extract PDF from P7M in your browserIt’s not a conversion: it’s an extraction
“Convert P7M to PDF” is what most people search for when they receive an attachment that won’t open and need to read it. When a PDF is digitally signed in CAdES format, the document already exists inside a CMS/PKCS#7 cryptographic envelope alongside the signature data. A compatible P7M viewer opens the envelope and extracts the original file directly.
Extracting an embedded PDF retrieves the exact original bytes without redrawing pages, running OCR, compressing images, or altering fonts. As a result, the extracted PDF preserves the full quality and layout of the original document. Printing to PDF is a separate operation that creates a new file.

contract.pdf.p7mcontract.pdfP7M vs PDF: What is the difference?
P7M describes the cryptographic container used for signed files, whereas PDF is the document format you view. With PAdES signatures, the signature is embedded inside the PDF (keeping the .pdf extension). With CAdES signatures, the file is wrapped in an outer container (adding the .p7m extension). Italian digital standards (AgID) treat these as two distinct signature formats.

Why can’t Adobe Acrobat, Apple Preview, or a browser open P7M files?
PDF viewers expect files to begin with standard PDF headers and structures. In a .pdf.p7m file, however, the outer structure is a CMS cryptographic envelope with the document stored inside. Attempting to open the file directly in Adobe Acrobat, Apple Preview, or a browser viewer results in an “unsupported format” or “damaged file” error. That error doesn’t mean the document is corrupt—it just means the viewer cannot unwrap the container.
Simply removing .p7m from the filename (e.g. renaming contract.pdf.p7m to contract.pdf) does not change the underlying data: PDF readers will still reject it. You must extract the embedded PDF first using a compatible tool, then open the resulting file in your reader. While Adobe Acrobat can validate PAdES signatures already embedded in a PDF, it does not unwrap external CAdES envelopes.
How to extract a PDF from P7M online
You don’t need to install a program. You can inspect the envelope in your browser without uploading the document to a server, then download the extracted PDF. Open the P7M to PDF tool.
Save the original attachment to your device.
Download the .p7m attachment from your email or PEC inbox to your computer or phone. Keep the original filename and save a copy of the signed envelope.
Select the file in the online viewer.
Click “Choose a file” or drag and drop your P7M file into the browser workspace. The file is processed locally in browser memory—nothing is ever uploaded to a server.
Preview the document and signature checks.
If the envelope contains a PDF, preview the first page immediately. For FatturaPA XML invoices, review key details in a clean layout. You can also inspect the independent digital signature checks.
Download the extracted document.
If the file contains a PDF, download the exact original document ready for printing or archiving. For supported XML invoices, you can download the original XML or generate a formatted PDF reading copy.
What is free and what requires a plan?
Opening P7M files, inspecting local signature checks, reading XML invoices, and previewing the first PDF page are completely free with no registration required. Downloading extracted files, printing, viewing all PDF pages, and exporting ZIP archives require a single export pass or license. You can process up to 50 files per session, subject to available browser memory. Compare pricing and download options.
What if the P7M file contains XML or another format?
Extraction recovers the actual file stored inside the envelope. For this reason, “XML P7M to PDF” and “PDF P7M to PDF” describe two very different operations:
- .pdf.p7m → Original PDF
- If the embedded file is a PDF, extraction retrieves the exact original document without converting pages or degrading visual quality.
- .xml.p7m → XML or Readable PDF
- Extraction returns the original XML file. For supported Italian FatturaPA e-invoices, our tool can also generate a readable PDF with the main invoice details. That PDF is a derived document and does not replace the XML or its signed P7M envelope.
- Word, images, and other formats
- A P7M envelope can package any file type (.docx, spreadsheets, images, etc.). Once extracted, open the file using its native application on your device.
- Nested signatures (.p7m.p7m)
- Documents signed by multiple parties in sequence can result in nested envelopes like document.pdf.p7m.p7m. A compatible reader unwraps each layer step by step while keeping the outer original.
How to open P7M files on Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS
You can use the tool in current browsers on computers, tablets and smartphones, subject to available memory. If you prefer an installed application, check that it supports extraction and separates document viewing from signature verification. The alternatives below are based on official documentation:
Windows 10 / 11
Save the attachment from Outlook, webmail or PEC, then select it in the online tool using Edge, Chrome or Firefox. If you prefer desktop software, Aruba Sign offers verification and extraction: select Verifica, choose the P7M file, click Apri documento, then Estrai documento to save the original contents.
Mac / macOS
Save the P7M from Apple Mail or your browser, then select it in the online tool using Safari, Chrome or Firefox. If the contents are PDF, open the extracted document with Apple Preview or Quick Look. Alternatively, Aruba Sign for macOS provides local verification and extraction.
iPhone / iPad · iOS / iPadOS
From Apple Mail or your PEC app, tap Share, then Save to Files. Open Safari, go to our online tool, and select the attachment from Files. As an installed alternative, P7M Viewer (by Filippo Maguolo) on the App Store imports files and exports enclosed content.
Android
Download the attachment from Gmail or PEC, then select it in the online tool through your mobile browser’s file picker. After downloading, find the result in the browser’s download list. For e-invoices, Lettore P7M – Fatture XML (by opr torino) opens invoice data and saves a readable PDF; it does not verify digital signatures and is not a reader for arbitrary signed PDFs.

Does the extracted PDF keep the digital signature?
Extraction preserves the exact content, but the standalone PDF does not include the outer envelope’s CAdES digital signature. Keep the original .p7m file to retain its signature data, alongside the PDF reading copy. If the enclosed PDF already contained an embedded PAdES signature, that remains part of the PDF, separate from the outer envelope (this site does not verify PAdES signatures). A visual signature stamp or image does not establish cryptographic validity.
Opening and extracting a document does not certify that its digital signature is legally valid. Our tool evaluates cryptographic integrity, certificate dates, trust chain, and revocation status separately. Because all checks run locally in your browser without querying online OCSP or CRL servers, without adequate local evidence revocation remains unverified. An unverified result is not a valid result, and these technical checks do not replace qualified legal verification.
P7M to PDF: Troubleshooting and FAQ
Can I convert P7M to PDF for free?
Here, opening the P7M, local signature checks and the first PDF page preview are free. Downloading the extracted PDF, printing or viewing all pages requires a paid single export or license.
Why did I get an XML file instead of a PDF?
Because the original file inside the envelope was an XML document (standard for Italian electronic invoices). Extraction restores the true original file. For supported FatturaPA invoices, our tool allows you to view invoice details and generate a readable PDF copy.
The file still will not open. What should I check?
Download the attachment again from your email or PEC inbox and make sure the .p7m extension is preserved. Check that you saved the actual attachment rather than a web page, an incomplete download, or the full PEC email (.eml). Corrupted envelopes, detached signatures (.p7s), or encrypted messages require different procedures.
Does this work with encrypted smime.p7m files?
No. The .p7m extension is used both for digitally signed files (CMS SignedData) and encrypted emails (S/MIME EnvelopedData). This tool opens signed documents, but cannot decrypt encrypted messages, which require the recipient’s private key and a configured email client.
Can I do the reverse: convert PDF to P7M?
Creating a signed P7M requires a CAdES signing application or service and the signer’s certificate and private key. Renaming a PDF to .p7m does not create a digital signature. This website opens existing signed envelopes; it does not sign new documents.
